(A) それ以前には，人が話すのを聞くことは直接体験することしかできなかった。話し手の口から音が出るときに聞き手は耳を傾けておかねばならなかった。我々は蓄音機が発明される以前の，エイブラハム・リンカーンのゲティスバーグの演説のような偉大なスピーチの文言を読むことはできる。しかし，リンカーン大統領がその文言をまさにどのように読み上げていたかは，永久に聴くことができない。

(B) これらの実験の大半で，被験者が運動でどれほどのカロリーを余分に消費していたかを考慮して，その値を計算すれば予測されたであろう減量分の体重量を大きく下回った。この研究に関わった研究者が疑って，時に証明してきたことは，運動をするものの種が何であれ，運動をした後には空腹になって，カロリーを多く摂取する傾向にあるということだ。
・全体像 「運動後には空腹感が強く，余計にカロリーを摂取してしまうため，人間であれ，動物であれ，運動だけでは効果的に減量することはできないかもしれない」
※１ the participants lost far less weight than … 「（実験の）被験者は…より減量した体重が大きく下回った」の意味。far＋比較級で，farは「差が大きい」ことを示す。
※２ than would have been expected, mathematically, given … で，would have been expectedが仮定法過去完了であることから，mathematicallyを条件に見立てて読むと，「計算すれば予測されたであろう」となる。さらに，mathematicallyの後続のgiven … が「何を計算するか」を具体的に述べている。
※３ exercisers, whatever their species, tend … で，whatever their speciesからbe動詞が省かれている。また，第１文より，the participantsはpeopleとanimalsと分かるので，their [= exercisers] speciesは「運動をするものの種」でよい。
※４ consume more caloriesの訳に「さらに多くのカロリーを消費する」は避ける。ここは内容上，「さらに多くのカロリーを摂取する」と読むべきところ。LDOCEにはconsume: 1. to use time, energy, goods etc 2. (formal) to eat or drink somethingとあり，2. の意味で使われている。

Space is far darker than you might expect, and in the lifeless world exists the Earth, whose beauty is beyond description. What evoked such a feeling in me was that, above all, the atmosphere surrounding our planet is surprisingly thin. The earth, outside of which there is just a dark world with no life forms in it, sustains various kinds of living things.

You are supposed to use words with fixed meanings and that can be found in ordinary dictionaries. The grammar that you use should not be different from that of other people, either, because you are expected to speak so that other people can understand what you are saying. That is, you are not so different from others in grammar and vocabulary. If everyone says things that others also may say, then what is it that gives us a unique personality?

While you are walking on a street that you have never been to before, you may fall over a stone to find something valuable right in front of you. Therefore, you should have a positive attitude towards reading. If you come across a book about a field you find even a bit interesting, just start reading it, even if you feel that there may not be any benefits to your present work or studies.
